Willful Blindness: Why We Ignore the Obvious at Our Peril

On the show with me today we’ll be joined with Tim McDonald- the leading thought leader on building communities and the current director of community at The Huffington Post.

As social entrepreneurs, a lot of us have a specific niche that we are working in or a broken system that we are trying to fix or just recreate. To do that, one of the most important things we need to do is build a thriving community that brings our people together and helps our community do better work and connect.

Seth Godin calls these communities Tribes. And, just in case you haven’t heard that term before, it refers to the need to bring together your people, your community, your market in such a tight-knit way that you will be missed if you were to one day drop off the face of the earth. Make no mistake that these communities should be like family.

On the call Tim shares:

  • 3 Tips to Build a Thriving Community for Your Niche Market
  • How to Create Movements
  • The Difference Between Networks and Communities
  • Why Communities Matter in Business Today

Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder

This episode will focus on helping you build a legacy in your life, one full of meaning and impact. Not too long ago I sat down to write a life plan after reading a bit of Tony Robbins. I sat there in a hotel room in Portland, Maine as two feet of snow blanketed the city.

I’ve always wanted to live a meaningful life and really enjoyed getting to spend some time to concretize my life goals. It started with a bit of a morbid thought. I had to ask myself, “What do I want people to remember me for?” In other words, what did I want people to say about me at my funeral.

Talk about scary, right?

It started with an overarching goal and then I had to break it down into smaller steps to line up what I am doing today to match what I want to have done in my life.

Not much different from a long-range business plan. Start with what you want to see in one year, then break it down into quarters.

This is why I am so happy to be joined with Todd Henry. He has worked extensively with businesses and entrepreneurs to build a business around the legacy you want to leave in life.

On the call, Todd shares:

  • The definition of “Dying Empty”
  • What’s up with finding your passion
  • Building a structure to do your best work
  • How to avoid burnout
  • How to focus if you have a full-time job
  • Developing daily rituals
